TI5 Main Event Day 4 Recap: Virtus.Pro Upset Team Secret, VG Undefeated, and A New 10 vs. 10 Custom Game Mode
After four days of Dota, only five teams remain at the International. VP had the biggest upset of the tournament by eliminating Secret in a tense 2-1 win. VG was unstoppable with a 7-0 record from the lower bracket. MVP.Phoenix entertained again with the first Slark pick of the main event. And Valve introduced a new 10 vs 10 custom game mode in their all star match. I hope they’ll also increase the number of reports available.
MVP.PHOENIX VS VICI GAMING
Game 1
Both teams picked up signature heroes Morphling for Hao and Slark for QO. Early skirmishes went back and forth, with one notable early fight where QO picked up three kills in the top lane with help from March’s charge and a rotation from kpii’s Queen of Pain.
MVP cemented a sizable lead at minute 23, where March’s 17% bash became 100% on Hao’s Morphling, and MVP took a 4 for 0 fight.
However, VG eventually picked up defensive items such as Ghost Scepter on Super’s Lina and Glimmer Cape on CM. They were able to get consecutive pickoffs on Slark with great chain stuns. QO most likely erred in his item choice when he opted to go for Basher instead of BKB. It was too difficult for him to navigate through VG’s control in Lina, CM, and well placed cogs by iceiceice. MVP were set too far back when Hao’s Morphling finally took over the game.

GAME 2
VG started off strong, winning all their lanes, including Super’s Lina matched up against a dual lane. Both Witch Doctor and Dazzle took rotations to protect QO’s QoP, who was constantly being harassed by Lina and Earthshaker. The difference being that Earthshaker wasn’t always there, but the threat was enough for MVP to keep their supports behind QO. Meanwhile, they had no answer for iceiceice’s Broodmother doing Broodmother things by taking over their jungle and lane. Iceiceice by his lonesome forced a five man rotation by MVP to protect their hard camp stack.
This was another solid performance by VG. They established map control, and Hao’s Storm cornered MVP inside their base.

SECRET VS VP
Game 1
VP weren’t hesitant to bring out new heroes when they picked Medusa. However, Secret took advantage of VP’s weak early game lineup. Medusa isn’t a carry that can impact the game until her first damage item. And by the time G picked up his Rod of Atos, VP were running out of towers and space on the map. Arteezy’s TA snowballed, despite the mismatch against silencer. Zai and Puppey worked well in conjunction with the well executed Vacuum and Echo Slam follow up. Secret secured the game in less the thirty minutes.

It’s not too common where you see Arteezy have four deaths by 12 minutes. Virtus Pro punished Luna’s early game, with well timed rotations by G’s Storm Spirit. S4, however, had a great start and picked up an early Orchid at 13 minutes. He immediately picked off Storm Spirit shortly afterward.
Arteezy’s Luna was a liability for the entire game. By 20 minutes he was behind all of VP’s heroes in net worth. In a last ditch effort, Secret’s five man smoke ran into VP’s five man smoke. Virtus Pro was able to re-engage after Secret’s short bkbs and wipe them out with a global silence and a timely Echo Slam.

S4 died twice in a row, both times due to great fissures again by DKPhobos. The first was from the mid lane high ground and G’s Storm Spirit followed up to finish. Once S4 revived, he tp’d to his offlane to kill QoP, but DKPhobos was there again with a counter fissure.
VP controlled Roshan the entire game, even against Secret’s attempts to delay it with the threat of Zai’s Dark Seer. In one Roshan skirmish, Kuroky went for the aegis steal, using Storm’s ball lightning, but he was a moment too slow and VP won the fight three for one.
VP managed to get pickoff after pickoff with their smoke ganks, off excellent initiation by DKphobos’ Earth Shaker. Secret did mount some valiant holds with Zai hitting a clutch vacuum to take out four of VP’s heroes, and Arteezy’s six slotted Shadow Fiend almost able to singlehandedly take out all of VP’s heroes.
However, Secret were on the defensive for the entire game and VP was still able to hit their objectives by taking out all the lanes of raxes. They had to throw bodies for the final bottom melee rax, but that sealed the game.

VICI GAMING VS EHOME
Game 1
VG went with their Pugna lineup, reminiscent of TI4, and by 14 minutes they took out all of EHOME’s t1 towers. By 19 minutes they were threatening high ground.
EHOME attempted to respond with a Naga sleep initiation on two VG heroes, but they don’t see the rest of VG’s team waiting behind. VG took the fight three for one.
VG forced EHOME on the defensive for the rest of the game. They took one lane of rax by brute force, but on their attempt in the next lane, EHOME was able pickoff Hao’s Gyro with a blink+lift before he could use BKB.
It wasn’t until until 51 minutes that EHOME attempt to fight with a 5 man smoke. Cty had a chance to pickoff Gyro with a double Laguna Blade, but VG saved their carry with an immediate Glimmer Cape. By the end of the game, BKB timers on EHOME were down to five seconds so an extended fight favored VG. With fy’s Disruptor baiting out EHOME’s bkbs, all iceiceice had to do was wait on his refresher Zeus for a double ultimate.

Fy’s disruptor did some serious lifting in the early game. In the first ten minutes he got first blood in his offlane, and two kills on rOtk’s Sand King in his safe lane. Hao had near perfect CS on his Anti-Mage and also a kill on Gyro from a rotation in the mid lane. He achieved the fastest Battlefury timing, 12min 58s, of patch 6.84.
Eventually the game slowed down and EHOME was able to stabilize from their rough start. At 18 minutes, YJ and rOtk picked off Hao’s farmed Anti-Mage with the help of global silence.
However, the potential of VG’s draft shined when EHOME ganked Anti-Mage again with global, while also killing Winter Wyvern in the same duration. VG, now 3v5, landed a Static Storm and Kinetic Field on two, and with Super’s Sonic Wave follow up, they picked off four of EHOME’s heroes.
LaNm made the play of the game when he used a stolen snowball to save his team when VG invaded their jungle. They turned the fight around with Sand King and Silencer’s global, wiping out all of VG and racking up more bloodstone charges for Cty’s Storm Spirit.
Still, Gyro was grossly underfarmed and EHOME’s lineup didn’t have the damage to deal with both QoP and AM. Cty tried for the hail mary by zipping from his fountain to the Radiant side shop. He misjudged his mana pool and came short of hitting any of VG’s heroes. It was a simple kill for Hao who turned around and activated Abyssal Blade.

Some of these games were insanely intense, sad to see secret and ehome leave but VG and VP deserve to go further. i'd say a lot of compendium predictions went wrong today.

No offense @Fall, but syaing this TI was a disappointment shows how little you respect other teams, IMO. This TI is the fucking best one yet. Multiple fucking upsets, teams that you didnt even know that would go past group stages owned.
Many compendium predictions were wrong and while I wanted Secret or Ehome to win, I love how well teams are showing their dota and its just fucking awesome that this TI, LITERALLY EVERY TEAM HAS A CHANCE TO WIN.
If you really watched most TI games in its entirety - live - you will know how intense these games are. The gold and XP swings on many of them were epic. This TI runs on the 6.84 patch, which really keeps viewers on their seats, full of anticipation. 6.84 is (in)famous for its bounty and XP changes from previous patches.
Another game just concluded: Evil Genius vs CDEC. If you watch the game in its entirety, you'd understand how this TI is not disappointing at all.

CDEC, a team that never won a game, climbed all the way up from the wildcard stage, is now in the grand finals. How is that disappointing? If you watched the interview with Garder after CDEC made it to the grand finals, you will understand that CDEC players have humility. Also, they have unity and are accepting of their teammates mistakes. This is so different from most dota2 players, where people verbally abuse one another. CDEC learned from their mistakes after losing 0-2 to Evil Geniuses in the group stage.
