Job and family life slows you down in-game? in General Discussion

Fresh graduate, am currently job hunting. I've already had an offer but I'm holding out for a better one, because I currently have a part-time, and am not under immediate financial pressure to work. At the same time, I've been thinking about taking further steps w my GF.
To the fellow Dotards here who are already working full-time, did you experience a drop in mechanical skill, or a general MMR drop, around the time you got employed? Same deal with those who got into a deeper relationship (live-in, engaged and married, etc)

    Altaire

When you got married, your life isn't about you anymore. You simply can't go ham playing dota 24/7 or whenever you want to be, you need to be responsible and allocate your time accordingly. While there is no decreasing mechanical skill or smt like that, your mmr might be affected due to less time to play, and it may cause less experience compared to your fellow players

And it is fine tbh, dota is a game in the end, not a life changing skill

Well it is if you're a pro player...

once u start a job have a wife and kids your time with dota will drop in half. Since right now we're sort of "free" doing whatever we want until marriage or work we've a lot of free time to spend. Some chose games some to go outside. Being married (not me) and having a job (not me) will reduce you the time of playing games in general. Example: I've now full day of doing whatever i want either play games, training or go outside i've all this time. But once you go work your free time that u've from 24h will reduce. Example if u work from 08:00 to 18:00 or 20:00 you will have time for basically nothing. Unless probably in the weekends to play games. But even in the weekends u might need to do some family job that needs to be done. Either way for games u might have time for like 2-5 hours at max a day, but if you're tired and want to go to bed early (example after work) these hours reduces highly. Or you'll completely stop playing games.
(i've hidden my dotabuff profile i still play)

actually your job and relationship wont effect dota (talking about skills) but Dota might effect your job or relationship
I work full day and when I have free time at night, I ply dota instead of talking to my girl / also some nights I ply a lot and next morning I get fucked up at work

anyway it won't effect ur mechanical skills, only limits your time which u can still manage to create space for dota

now that I have a job and make lots of money, I mostly just smurf. I got to immortal just to prove myself that I'm good enough to do it, but now I just play on smurfs because it forces you to not care about the games and you just have fun. You also teach the noobs how to play correctly.

at the end of the day if you're not going pro, having high mmr just means increased queue time, harder games, consume more energy per game, and also have ladder anxiety. I get none of this when I smurf.

                  (Bot) Beerus

also if I have my girlfriend come in the room and try to talk, it's no problem because i'm smurfing and the enemy team is trash 4ks anyways

the difference ive noticed for myself whenever i play either low priority or normal games i'm a lot more calm and not stressed or usually i dont care and flame as much as in ranked. I just come and go and play whatever position is left for me.

@remove flicker just dont rush at playing matches. if u ply like all day for thoose 2 weeks u will be fucked after those 2 weeks cause u can't ply suddenly and it is not normal. just try to control number of matches u ply in weekends by adding other hobbies

                                  Farzad

It should be otherwise I mean dota must be considered the thing that is obstacle for your job family and life...in life you can't have everything together either you take responsibility for your job ,family or responsibility for your game.if you can handle dropping 3k mmr due to pause in your play go for it.
