in general its just a fancy picture to represent your mmr. less fancy if you are shit at the game.
theres a raw numeric table that seems to be the base structure, influenced by stuff like performance, difference between solo and party mmr and who knows what else. sometimes ppl gain multiple stars and even full medals out of nowhere.
this system is like playing a game in early alpha. disregard it, track your mmr instead. its gonna be reworked, debugged, bugged, reworked again, removed, added back into the game and removed again soon

Hi guys I was wondering if anyone could shine some light and help me understand the new badges system. I’m a lover of Dota and made poor choices within the past with my mmr. Currently as we speak have a solo 500mmr. After doing my 10 calibration games I was then given a herald 4 star badge. After this I continued playing for about 30-40 games and won only 40% of the games. I then played slark and won the game for myself and my team. Baring in mind previous to this game I was on a 4 games losing streak and won the game with slark and got a GUARDIAN 2 star. I was wondering if anyone could help me understand why I’ve increased off the back of that one game? Thanks guys.
